Bento #10 - Owls

Hoot, hoot, hoot ... Let's HOOT to school!!!

This owl very cute right. Creater of this owl is a fellow bento mum who make much more nicer and interesting bentos. I enjoy following her on her bento blog.

Bento #9 - Zoo Theme

"Let's go to the zoo ... see the monkeys go Woo Woo Woo ... Let's go to the zoo right now ..."

This is a song from one of the toys my boys have at home. A very catchy song with catchy lyrics. Kinda remembered this song as I began blogging. Did a series of 'ZOO' bento to mark Oswald's 1st excursion with the Primary School. Destination - The Singapore ZOO!!!

I packed a little special bento for him to bring along for him to snack on during break time at the zoo.

Mummy was so into making bread these days, haven't been able to sit down to plan out designs for the boys' bento. Thank god for the Onigiri wrappers that I'd bought from Daiso on an impulse. Gladly took it out to place the bread (molded by using my rice molds) that I'd prepared for Oswald. Threw in some other snacks and a packet of drink for him. That Onigiri wrapper really brightens up the bento.

******************************

Did a lion face for the boys' bento with the set of bento tools in the picture. Never gotten the chance to fully utilize this set of tools ... finally the chance came.

Roar ... roar ... roar ... here comes the friendly lions :)

Did the lion using 2 different type of cheese and cut the shape out using a bento tool in the 1st picture. To save time, I use edible markers to add the dots near the lion's mouth. Both the boys have similar food except presented in a different way.

******************************

The Silent Monkey. A gentle reminder to Owein to keep quiet while teacher is teaching and listen quietly. Seriously I am not very sure how he had been behaving in class. But since there is no complain from teacher so far, I assume he is ok.

******************************

The Grazing Giraffe. Don't know how come I get a very calm and peaceful feeling with I see this bento. Maybe is the animal itself or probably is the overall layout.

******************************

Made a very simple bento dinner for the boys today too. We are heading out to a Chinese restaurant for dinner today. Chinese restaurant = not much food choices for Oswald. Oh yes my POTATO son, not a great fan of Chinese style food ... SIGH!!!

Simple 蛋包饭 with frozen food as sides. I must admit these frozen food are not exactly my best choice of food for my boys but they really do come in handy when I am short of time and help to prepare 'proper' food. I usually have these stash stored in my freezer for times like this.

Bento #8 - Back to School

Copied this idea from a fellow bento mum.

Here's a book of ABCs for Owein. End of the 1st week of Term 2 already ... hope he is geared up already.

Oswald's book ... is a reminder of the lessons that he will be having in school today :p

Hope with all these bentos that remind the boys of school, help to gear them up for the new things they going to learn in this term. 加油!!!

Bento #7 - Monsters

Monster Themed bentos ... Thought I had enough of cutie stuffs for now any wanted to make something scary but ... all my monsters all turned out looking cute!!! LOL.

See if you can guess who is this ...

Got it??? YES ... it is Mike Wazowski from Monster Inc.

Decided on Mike so that I can use the yellow hat that I bought sometime back. Used a triangular onigiri mould to mould my bread, that explains all the lines that you see on Mike.

Topped up with mini oreos and gummy from Marks and Spencer for Owein.

For Oswald's Mike, I decided to use Pandan Cake instead so I get a green Mike (which is the actual color) instead of a white one.

******************************

Presenting DOMO Kun ...

Used a mini chocolate swiss roll for Domo this time and cheese cut outs for facial expressions, using food coloring to color up the cheese.

Bento #6 - Sandwich Cutters Bentos

Bought 2 new cutters by Munchkin recently and had decided to give them a try.

1) Elephant Shape sandwich cutters.

Let's go for an elephant ride ...

2) Penguin sandwich cutters.

企鹅哥哥和弟弟一起去上学.

Cute sandwiches right =]

Glad to have these cutters. They really do save the days when I've got no inspiration at all or am feeling lazy. I was totally drained out by last week's events and our short trip to Port Dickson. Brain cells are totally malfunctioning.

Bento #5 - Ladybug Burger

Made this Giant Ladybug for the boys' lunch on 21 February 12.

Copied this idea from a new book that I bought recently. Book titled: Fun Food for Kids by Page One Publishing. I'd altered some ingredients used to suit the taste of my boys. Dressed it up a little and VIOLA. I am very please with the result and so were the boys.

Bento #4 - Love is in the AIR!!!

Love Themed bentos for Valentine's Day week.

Sent the boys to school with an envelope fill with love.

Both boys get exactly the same bento but I personalized their bento by placing their name on the envelope. Hope they enjoy their V-Day bento and can feel mummy's love for them.

******************************

Cannot leave out hubby's share of love on Valentine's Day. Made a simple breakfast for hubby ...

肉干面包 with a Heart Sausage.

******************************

In Owein's box, he got Nutella Chocolate Hearts with Heart Sausages and Fruit Loops. Feel so chocolaty ... YUMZ.

For Oswald, he wanted it plain so he can taste the original taste of the bread. How silly ... but mummy packed his box up with plain Chocolate Hearts + Heart Sausages + a Pineapple Tart as a treat.

******************************

Simple Heart Shape Sandwich with Rainbow Sparkles + Rice Crackers and Biscuits for Owein.

Oswald had to bring fruits to school today hence made Roses out of Strawberries for him and to house them, left me not much space for his bread. That explains the small hearts you see in Oswald's box.

Bento #3 - Under the Sea

Did a series of Themed bentos at the beginning of the year and this is one of it.

Dinner for the boys on 元宵节. Lifted an idea which I saw before.

The one above is for Oswald and below is Owein's box. Everything packed is the same for the boys except for the meat. Oswald have Chicken Karaage and Owein is Fish Fingers. Oswald would prefer chicken to fish and Owein vice versa and that explains the different type of meat packed.

******************************

The boys' 'sea' view bento.

Sandwich with a view ... Nutella sandwich + Octodogs (Pork Sausages) for Owein

Strawberry jam sandwich + Octodogs + Pineapple Tarts and Gummies for Oswald.

******************************

A bonus bento for Oswald to eat on the way to music class. Presenting ... Missy Octopus.

Missy Octopus is made from ham from an illustration from Yum Yum Bento Book. Rice balls with ham and 1/2 an egg coated with Pork Floss as sea bed and his favorite vegetable Broccoli to fill up the gaps.

******************************

'Fishy' business today to end the theme.

Owein had requested for a repeat of his previous bento and hence requested granted. P/S: save me some brain juice cos not need to brainstorm what to do.

This time, he wanted peanut butter spread on his bread ... wish granted. Paired with his bread are 2 'Fishy' Pork Sausages and Raisins.

For Oswald, he wanted to bring fruits (Blueberries + Oranges) to school for his weekly Fruits and Vegetables day. In order to ensure he can finish his food fast and eat his fruits, I'd decided to pack a lesser amount of bread and in bite site.

Took out my fish cutter to cut bread in the fish shape and made plans to add details to his fishes. Sort of regretted my decision when I was placing the details this morning. I think I will think twice next time when such details are required in the future. But seriously, I am quite satisfied with the final result. =)

Bento #2

Oswald has his favorite bread (Gardenia Fruit and Nut) packed into his box today. I had used his bento box to help cut the shape of the bread so that it fits nicely in the corner. Used the remaining scraps to cut the flower which was placed on the top. Filled up the rest of the space with an Orange and a Pineapple Tart (CNY stash).

Bento #1 - Reminiscing 2011

I shall being my bento blogging with some bentos that I'd made in the past. Picking only those that I am satisfied to share here ...

Packed this bento for my boys for dinner. We had to attend a cousin's wedding this day and the boys get to tag along.

Their dinner comprised of:-

1) Chicken Karaage - store bought, frozen ones very convenient indeed.
2) Pumpkin Onigiri - used Japanese pumpkin for this and it gives a very nice yellow color to the rice.
3) Broccoli, Carrots, Baby Corn and Quail Eggs as space fillers and garnish.

******************************

ANGRY BIRDS!!!

My daring attempt and luckily responds turned out well and are well accepted by the kids. Made these for a BBQ party with some friendly neighbors at my place.

Char Siew sauce is used to dye the rice red, egg yolks to make it yellow and edamame for the green.

******************************

Had been packing nice food for my boys and thought it would be unfair for the biggest boy (my hubby) hence found a chance to pack food for him to bring work one day ...

Hmm .. too cute to be a man's bento? LOL, not too sure about it. All I know is hubby's box was empty when he brought home ;p

******************************

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE!!!

Made this for the boys on National Day 2011.

Used Char Siew Sauce to dye the rice red. Cheese for the wordings and symbols on the rice. Self made some flags and the National Day 2011 slogan to add on to the mood.

******************************

I did a series of Halloween bentos during Halloween week in 2011. Found all these ideas from our friendly search engine GOOGLE.

******************************

Hmm ... guess I was still picking up skills in 2011 and hence got nothing much to 'show off' :P Other than those above, I was not so please with the rest that I had made.

Bento Tips #1 - Freezing Rice

I'd did some read up on freezing rice here and I simply love the ideal.

Having portions of freezed rice in my freezer, it is a very useful thing especially for preparing last minute meals.

Where to begin ...

It all started from viewing a friend's (Tona) album on FB of all the food she packed for her son. Every box of bento she had made are so cute and and interesting. Really applaud her for all the effort put in to make food look interesting for her son.

Gradually I got influenced by her and had decided to start making food interesting for my boys. My boys get to pack food to school every Wednesdays and Fridays. Those are the days where the school would give 包 (steam buns) for snack time and my elder boy (Oswald) does not like.

How time flies ... thinking back, I had started making bentos for almost a year. During this period of time, I've picked up lots of tips and ideas from other bento makers. During the learning process, my bentos and slowly look better and nicer and my bento equipment collection had also grown larger.

After almost a year of bento making, I'd finally decided to start a bento blog. Mainly to document the bentos I'd made so far and for reference in the future (in case I decided to reuse an idea or to improve on it). Pardon me for my beginner skills ... I will continue to learn and one fine day, hope to make really really nice bentos like so many others out there.

For a start, let me share my stash of bento equipemnts.

Isn't it scary??? It all started out with an aim to make food more interesting for my boys and it turned out to be a huge collection of tools for mummy =P

BUT ... please don't be scared off. I admit I kind of gotten head over heels when it comes to equipment purchasing and everything I see is so cute and I just want to get my hands on them. In fact, I know of mums who prepare equally nice bentos with minimal tools. So please don't let my collection scare you off.
